IMPLEMENTATION OUTLINE
MensTrust Youth Programme –
Life skills, Personal Growth and Gender Sensitivity Training for Boys
The project consists of four phases leading to a sustainable network of boys that are mobilised and equipped to address their role and impact boys have in school activities.
PHASE ONE: PRELIMINARY MEETINGS
PRELIMINARY MEETINGS DURATION HOURS (8hours) COST
4 (Weeks) 4 x 2 hours
IMPLEMENTATION / ACTIVITIES
Visit the schools and communicating with principle and staff to secure their involvement in the project Inviting boys from the selected schools to attend a series of weekly workshops on issue faced by youth in schools and in their community. The boys who attend these sessions will be invited to participate in a weekend workshop.
PHASE TWO: WEEKEND WORKSHOP
WEEKEND WORKSHOP DURATION HOURS COST
FRIDAY TILL SUNDAY 32 HOURS
IMPLEMENTATION / ACTIVITIES
The weekend workshop will focus on building trust and team building, facing their fears, dealing with conflict and their anger, and provide tools to inspire and motivate the boys. This workshop contains a combination of fun and serious exercises that encourage them to explore themselves on a deeper level.
These workshops are facilitated by men from the community who wish to share their skills and knowledge to mentor the boys to reach their full potential and to take responsibility for their actions.
The weekend workshop is held in an event centre that can facilitate residential workshop. These are usually held at Soetwater, Kommetjie.
PHASE THREE: SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT GROUPS

Drugs 3 (Weeks) 3 x 2 hours

HIV/ AIDS 2 (Weeks) 2 x 2 hours
Gender Based Violence 2 (Weeks) 2 x 2 hours
IMPLEMENTATION / ACTIVITIES
MensTrust will conduct weekly two-hour integration and transition workshops over eighteen weeks to support the formation of the groups focusing on individual’s needs. MensTrust will also focus on social issues around youth needs. These can be hosted in school venue each week after school hours.
PHASE FOUR: ONGOING SUPPORT FOR THE GROUP

Facilitation skills 2 (Weeks) 2 x 2 hours
Leadership skills 2 (Weeks) 2 x 2 hours
Creating Support groups 2 (Weeks) 2 x 2 hours
IMPLEMENTATION / ACTIVITIES
On completion of the third phase the boys will be offered training in facilitation, leadership and how to create a peer support group over 12 weeks.
These boys will form a core group of peer-educators who will be asked to create peer support groups in their school and educate learners on peer pressure, crime, domestic violence and gender based violence, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS.
